This has been bugging me for awhile. My shift column has rust on it. I'm thinking I'll just get rid of the rust and paint it, so it's not that big of a deal. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I guess a new shift unit isn't covered in the warranty?

If you are still in the factory warranty, it is 3 years or 36k, bumper to bumper. EVERYTHING.
