Noticed 2 posts today from one spammer, both were p0rn posts with pics attached.
A different poster - had some sort of unknown language topic.
Where are the spam killers at when you need them?

I noticed tonight there have been 2 users who created about 6 or 7 threads of pure spam.
I know there is already a thread discussing adding a CAPTCHA feature.
My suggestion is this:
We have a bunch of great moderators on MO right now, perhaps add a few MO who are not moderators but who are "spam police".
In no way, do I mean to take anything away from the mods, but more eyes on MO can "CAN THE SPAM" and delete/terminate the users who spam MO. . . .

use the report post feature... it helps draw our attention to the posts... i just deleted 6 threads by the same guy, but i had no "reported post" messages. basically, i happened to notice the spammer and took action. if the report post feature had been used, all of the mods would have been alerted to the spam posts.

I noticed a trend with the spammers of late.
Their screen names are similar - for example:
OmerWN
TyleNX
BergKL
MikrEP
etc.
etc.
etc.
Guess the mods don't mind cleaning up the spammers crap....

Not to beat a dead horse, but I noticed that the spam creators are still logged in MO.
The spam threads they made are deleted which is great, but why aren't the spam bots banned?!
If I am out of line, I apologize, but it doesn't make sense to keep the spam bots around. . . .

they have lost the ability to post. if their account is suspended, they pretty much know right away... if we remove their ability to post, it takes them a bit longer to figure out they need to create a new account.

more spam in Western Canada Forum??
Roxtar
Dec 7 2008, 03:10 PM
the russian spammers seem to favor the western canada section.
They probably follow a google link to get there, and are using a generic search to find it that just happens to hit that forum first in the google search results.

Are we doomed to suffer with these useless spam threads forever?

im getting tired of this s***
can admin post up an antispam measure donation gb?
id contribute. id think others would too
i meant if adding a captcha feature into the mo.com software would cost money, would/could we donate?
seriously eric, i don't want or need a silver upgrade or whatever, but i think i could find a few buck to free up this unending tirade on our forum.
and, reported
Cheers
*edit* and for the record this was moved into this thread for one of the umpteen spam threads a mod deleted after one of my reports.
i mean it eric. post up the gb, or donation thread. come up with a needed total, we can have a big fake thermometer pledge drive and everything

you saw
a spam thread in "how do I?".... i guess you missed the other 15-20 that we mods have deleted from that section since it was created.
spammers make threads in the least often used forums. they figure that they can go longer without being noticed there. so, how-to, how do i, western canada, racing stories... these forums catch the bulk of posts.
it all seems to come in waves. unfortunately, the more dedicated members who are on here all the time suffer the most, because they see the new posts (and spam) first. ask a casual user, and they'd likely not even realize there was a spam issue. All I can ask is that you all keep reporting the threads as you spot them. post in the thread that it's been reported so that we don't get bombarded with duplicate messages.
We see a lot of reports coming from the same few members. We appreciate your efforts in keeping us informed of these threads so that we can take care of them.

Sorry for the little rant, I just wish there was some safeguards in place to prevent spammers from posting their BS.
There has got to be a way to keep the spammers out, but allow new members to come in with little to zero issues.

they've been picking up recently. there was a new release to the spam software (there was a spam thread advertising it on here... it was deleted). it can break captcha, auto-authenticate e-mail, mass PM, and other features. looks like we're stuck with it until IPB comes out with a new release.
XR2003
Mar 26 2009, 04:59 PM
would something like this help?
http://www.omgili.com/captcha.phpor a registration authorization code perhaps.
that should eliminate the bots, and if ANY still go through and post, then most likely those are human spammers that the mods can permaban.
We just have to stay one step ahead and not 2 steps behind.
dnm
Mar 27 2009, 06:54 AM
You can install unbreakable CAPTCHAs quite trivially. Just ignore IPB's stuff, and hack one in.
Human spamming is almost non-existant -- it's just not profitable.
