Full Version: 09 The Test Drive

Okay a while back I saw the new Matrix at the local Auto show and did a write up about it http://matrixowners.com/index.php?showtopi...mp;#entry988771 which was labeled as a Concept, well two days ago I finally had a chance to test drive an 09. What I drove was this
An S model with 17's in Radiant Red, Ash interior. 5 Spd auto tranny.
Overall the car was really quite similar in feel to my current 03 on the inside, I checked out the tilt and telescope and thought this will probably help out those that are reach impaired, but I drove it in the same position I drive mine in, tilt all the way up and telescope in. I have never really been onboard with Toyota's type of tilt and its no different with the 09. The dash layout also has a familiar feel to it even tho its all new, The little oval part of the instument cluster, that has been a point of contention with alot of people, really does fit when you are driving it and it took no time in adjusting to it, it has the temp and gear selection in it. The center stack is laid out nice with the HVAC controls and are easy to operate. The sound controls on the steering wheel are great and am glad they have incorperated this into the Matrix, I don't like that the clock is seperate from the stereo and eyes off the road low . I like the new overhead compartment. The sunroof no longer has the halfway stop in it, but I didn't really care for the controls, now they are like the window cotrols which I like but because they are overhead they are like opposite of the window controls, I'm sure this would work itself out in ownership and new to the Matrix, owners probably wouldn't have this issue.
I didn't really like the look of the Ash interior, it has this weird multi color effect that apears to look like the interior is stained. I really like the Dark Charcoal in the XRS and would choose it for the interior.
I only drove it for about 5 miles but its a loop I use when test driving that has a mix of most road conditions in it. The first section is a mile and 1/2 stretch of highway that from the stoplight I was able to get on it and quickly get up to speed, letting the tranny shift itself and the shifts were pretty smooth at full throttle up to 65, a dime over the posted limit. I was actually surprised at how well it accelerated, actually felt some torque and it pulled straight and the power was very linear, no real falloff when shifting. From there I pull a u turn and and nail it again, this time getting a decent amount of wheel spin and I started shifting manually (I love this feature) I came to a stop sign and nothing really new there, even tho its 4wdisc, stopping felt the same as mine. I let it rev to 2k setting with the brake on and then nail it again, this time got some really good wheel spin with the audible squeel, I was seriously thinking about now, that I could probably E-brake it and get the tires to light up relatively easy The rest of the loop is comprised of some left and right switch backs that each turn is different and have to be taken at different speed and one basically taken at rolling stop speed, this car also had the factory STB, then a short straight and back to the dealership.
I can't say that I was overly impressed with the new powerplant but definately pleasantly surprised, I'd like to run it against mine and see what happens.
The salesman was really spot on with his info and that really impressed me, no BS.
The dealership( Rick Collins Toyota/Scion )has 7 Trix's on the lot 3 Classic Silver all S trim, 2 with Hubby's and 1 with the 16' Alloy's, 2 Radiant also in S trim, with 17's, a Black Sand Base and a Magnetic Gray XRS with 18's in the Showroom (damnit)
I have enjoyed owning my car now, for almost 6 years and If I was gonna buy another I'd buy an 09 Sundance or Magnetic, probably in S trim but would have to drive an XRS to feel the difference with the IRS, before making a decission.
Here is a pic of the three Silver S's and a side by side of an 08 and 09.

What's the room like in the new ones is it similar or did we lose a few inches

I sat in the back seats too and it really is about the same, I think it lost space in the cargo area with the seats up but the overall space with the front and back seats folded seemed the same. The overhead space even with the sunroof felt the same.

Hi:

Wondering how the blind spot for rear side vision was, as there is not much size to the back side window?
DarkStryke
The blind spot is there, but it is not really any worse then other 4door hatches, or sedans that i've driven around in. It's a bit smaller cargo wise in the back, mostly due to the lip up to meeting the bumper, instead of flush like the 03-08's.

I just had a co-worker compare her 03 xrs to mine side by side in the parking lot today after work, and visually there is some minor volume loss in the back from the sub's positioning and lip but it's really not much to write home about. I believe hers sits on lower springs, so it was an inch or so tighter to the ground skirt / bumper wise. The seating folds mostly flat, I didn't notice much difference between hers and mine with everything down, again except for the lip up to the bumper.

Rear seating legroom felt the same, ditto overhead with moonroof on both cars. It's really not a drastic change some people make it out to be..

Hey Howard
I would have to agree with what DarkStryke said, I really didn't notice any significant difference. I think the new mirrors help alot with the side rear visibility, which I didn't mention above, are now folding and heated on the the one I drove. I think all in all updating to the 09 would be an easy transition and a step up with the new interior layout and ammenities, kinda like a new pair of prewashed jeans, they are new but feel like, the well worn ones, you've been wearing for years. Would be awesome to see one at the Next North Central meet, wink wink. lol

I don't know you, the original poster, nor do you know me, but I do recall reading this post before.

I know from the motorcycle world you are supposed to avoid full throttle starts and hard acceleration on new motors, and I'd be inclined to think the same is true for car motors.

Hearing you say you floored the accelerator several times producing wheel spin is disconcerting to hear about.

I'm printing your post and will keep it while car shopping, letting dealers know I'll seek a car with about zero miles on it.

wow ... someone is being anal. haha

Good luck finding a car that has 0miles.

My car came from the holding compound and it had 7 km on.

and ... as for the "I know from the motorcycle world you are supposed to avoid full throttle starts and hard acceleration on new motors" part ... well that can be argued on ... read this http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

anyways ... anything can be argued on ... good look on your car hunt smile.gif

I've always "stepped on it" when test driving a car..........I think even my mother has. How else are you supposed to be able to feel how much "umph" it has??

You are right, I don't know you, but this reply has opened up my eyes as to how naive you are and I'm in no way belittling you. But you have much to learn about the ways of the world. I guarantee any vehicle that has been driven, rode or piloted from a dealer lot has been throttled up for an acceleration test, wether it was the salesman showing it off or the customer trying to see what it will do.
I did not beat on this car, I drove it in a manner of real world testing. I didn't drive this car any different than I drive my own, because thats what I'm comparing it to. Have you ever seen an Automotive review of a vehicle based on its gradual acceleration to 60? I can answer that for you, no! because thats not how you are gonna try to get on the freeway(unless your grandma taught you how to drive) I don't beat on vehicles I'm borrowing, I reserve that for the ones I rent. lol
Break in, is a subject of much debate with as many opinions as there are stars.
I begin driving it as it will always be driven.

It's too bad they got rid of the 3rd rear window. I like mine.

Does the car get the same/worse/better mgp as its predecessors?

Good post.

the engine is bigger ... so it gets a little less I'm guessing ...

I get the same thing with the 2.4L I was getting with my 1.8 vvtl-i (XRS)
cchmura85
I test drove one a week ago I liked it but hey its got a bigger engine than my 2004 XR 1.8 stick. I didnt like how you cant hatch the rear window open like the older model. I would still buy another matrix in a heart beat. I still wish that leather was an option sad.gif

If someone's looking for a car with zero miles on it they're totally deranged. I have never in my life seen a car with no miles on it. Test drive my dears. Zero miles means no one has tried it out, and it might be a lemon, i don't want that.

I was lucky enough to get one with 1 mile on it....just off the truck and up the parking garage....I put the first 6 miles on it during the test drive. (At which time I drove crappily in the traffic considering it had been 4 years since I'd driven a stick and it was light after light of hills and stopping).

BTW, I don't know if you're still interested in the MPG but on my S I get about 29 mpg with about 90% of that being in town or below 50 mph start and stop on the Atlanta freeway. Can't wait to go back to TX and get some freeway miles!

i found that engine_break_in_secrets article very informative. i believe the guy, and thats exactly how im gonna break in my matrix engine when i get it.

my first job out of highschool was as a lotboy at a toyota dealership. a few times a week one of our jobs was to pick up cars at the docks fresh off the boat that the dealership needed. we would routinely drive them at wot on the highway and through town to get back. not neccessarily abusive, just driving them hard those first 30 kms.
im not bragging, its just that we were young and fearless and the cars werent ours. over time since then, i have had some guilty feelings about those years, we're talking alot of cars here, but now im guilt free.
well, mostly guilt free.

nice job on the test drive write up too by the way.

Thanks Justcuz for the links to the reviews (Post #24). I agree mostly with what the review about the AWD model says.
