If I drive like a grandma highway only, I'll go ~600-650km on a 45L fill up.
But I don't do that. |

I have a heavy foot but a friend of mine drove my XRS in the mountains and it did 580KM on 38.5 litres. My driving is usually highway and and my speed is normally 120 to 130 KPH. Mileage would then be 9 to 10 litres per 100KM

On average, I get about 270KM per fill up to gas light turning on. That's with remote starting for 10min every morning and evening until April probably. Not like I pay much for gas anyways, I get most of it back because of my job (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
I remember doing over 300KM once on a full tank when I used that winter gas mix thing...do those actually help? This post has been edited by rkim86: Dec 27 2009, 12:20 AM |

Winter gas actually results in slightly worse mileage.

Easily 200+lbs on a 30min drive. Combine that with remote starting every morning and evening for 10min? I'm actually surprised I can get above 250 clicks before filling up. |

My xrs tows my tubby a** around all the time and I drive like a jackass, and if I get < 450 to a tank, something's wrong. |

Sorry to bring up an old thread, this was kinda the closest I could find to my question.
1. Will using Regular gas hurt my 04 XRS? 2. Will my gas mileage get worse doing that? I filled up my new XRS for the first time today. Thanks in advance. |

Ever since I bought my car, I've learned to keep a steady foot. I always keep the RPM going around 1.5k and 2.5k. That's where I feel I can get the best torque/fuel economy combination. With regular gas and some use of stp fuel cleaner products, I've maintained an average of 31mpg, with my best tank being 34mpg (50% hwy). I haven't been on a long road trip but I know I could get 36+mpg by respecting the speed limit on the highway. You waste 20% more fuel going 120km/h compared to 100km/h...
If someone can't get any better then 20-25mpg in a Matrix, they need to change their [bad] driving habits and possibly have their car checked for issues affecting gas mileage. Sorry to bring up an old thread, this was kinda the closest I could find to my question. 1. Will using Regular gas hurt my 04 XRS? 2. Will my gas mileage get worse doing that? I filled up my new XRS for the first time today. Thanks in advance. 1. It probably won't. Look in your driver's manual to see what is the recommended octane for it. From what I know, they recommended 91 at first and then they started saying 87 was adequate for the 2zz engine, which is the XRS engine. 2. Probably not, but I can't see it become better. If it does become worse, it won't be by much. This post has been edited by MatrixDom: Jun 5 2010, 06:03 AM |

Sorry to bring up an old thread, this was kinda the closest I could find to my question. 1. Will using Regular gas hurt my 04 XRS? Yes! The 2zz-ge motor in the 04 XRS has a compression ratio of 11.5:1. This means that if you put in 87 octane gas, you will get predetonation from the gas igniting due to compression before the spark fires. This is known as knock. Fortunately, the car is designed to detect knock and retard timing to save it, but it will run like a bag of s***, your gas mileage and emissions will go to hell, and it can still cause damage anyway. |

Ugh, Ok... Thanks for the info. Unfortunately my Matrix didn't come with a manual. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) I guess I'll have to drive gingerly til my next fill up.

Or you could buy a couple of STP Octane Booster bottles to make up for it until your next fill up (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

I was used to get 8L-9L/100km for a year mixed driving and the last 2 weeks were the worst gas mileage I've ever had...
I just did a road trip and I got 425km and the light came up while driving at 100km/h (60mph). I was used to get 550km, I Changed my air filter, new oil, I always gas at 94 octane... It's getting me crazy.. and when I shut off my car I can smell gas I checked under the car and no leaks neither under the hood. My mechanic can't find why it smells gas.. |

If it smells like gas, and your mileage has gone far down, obviously, you've got a gas leak somewhere. |
