in a nutshell, no, you have to be able to tune vvt when you lower lift or the motor will just pull timing and you get nowhere.
If you swap in an 03 xrs ecu with a patch harness you get lowered lift with all the tuning done by toyota.
it's plug and play.
a long time ago a member named nolat made a lift controller
here is the thread but the file that nolat posted seems to be gone :
http://matrixowners....ift-controller/
it worked but the ecu in our cars is very smart and would correct it due to the fact you couldn't tune it.
the long and short of it is you would need some kind of piggyback and a camcon to make it run right. ( if i remember right he had it activated at 5600rpm or so)
there are only two options
you can get an 03 ecu and a patch harness and lower lift.
or you can get a pfc or hydra and lower lift even further with the ability to tune it properly.
the former will give you lift sooner but as for being faster i think it's neglible
the latter will give you lower lift and make your car a tad faster but it cost a fair amount to do so and don't be prepared for massive gains.
that's pretty much it
i hope that helps

Not a tach, an RPM switch.
I'm sure you could also build the circuitry to fake the resistance of an OCV even cheaper.

I wonder what the OCV resistance would be. I suppose it would be very high. Could rig one up to battery and measure the voltage drop across the OCV and calculate resistance that way.

It needs to be a positive thing for them. If you force them to use the potty it will only drag it out
