Need Critique, Flash Photography Indoors.

hey guys,
so i got 2 lenses, the tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and the canon 50mm 1.8
last night i took the canon 50mm with me to D&B to take pics of co-workers.
i thought maybe i can get away with not using flash, but i forgot how freakin dark it was in D&B.
here's some pics i took, with a rebel xt and a canon 50mm f1.8
flash was really harsh on some people's faces, especially that shiny glare. i tried playing w/ aperture and shutter speeds at the beginning (that's why the orange glow on some pictures) but ended up using the automatic feature cuz it can't focus on anything.
any thoughts on how i should approach this kind of situation next time? i was thinking of a flash diffuser to reduce the glare, i don't know, maybe u guys have more thoughts on this?
