Hey guys,

This is my how-to for plasti-dipping rims. For those of your who are not familiar with Plasti-Dip I'm going to give you a quick run down on it.

Description of Plasti-Dip

Plasti-Dip is a synthetic rubber coating that comes in spray cans. Basically you can spray your rims with it and it goes on like paint and dries up like paint and looks like painted rims but the upside to Plasti-Dipping is that you can now rip the plastic off! So now you have the option of having "painted oem rims" with the option of going back to the oem color in case you want to sell your car, etc.

How Do I Remove It?

You basically rip it off. It does take some effort at first to peel a part of it (if it didn't then it wouldn't be durable) but it does completely come off. Here is a video example:

Availability:

A lot of guys on different forums in the U.S. are claiming that you can pick this stuff up anywhere like Home Depot, etc and is easily attainable. Now for Canadians it's a bit harder. As far as the Toronto area is concerned I couldn't find this stuff at Lowe's, Home Depot, Rona or Canadian Tire. The only place that carried it was Home Hardware.

Price:

$15 CAN. Not sure how much it is in the states but it's not going to be much different.

What You'll Need:

-(3) Spray cans of Plasti-Dip (which ever color you decide to choose - I personally chose Black).
-Cue Cards (I got a 100 Pack - Used around 25 each rim)
-Degreaser/soap & water to clean rims
-Cloth to dry the rims up
-Jack/Jack stands

Process:

1. Begin with taking the rims off your car. I put my car on four jack stands but if you don't have jack stands it's going to be a bit hard because you'll have to do rim by rim or have a spare on one side and your jack on the other.

2. Clean your rims properly and make sure to get all the road grime off so that the Plasti-Dip can easily adhere to the rims. I used a degreaser first and then soap and water. You can just use soap and water.

3. Dry the rims up properly and assure that they are completely dry.

4. Begin to put the cue cards around the rims between the tires and rims so that your tires don't get Plasti-Dip on them.

5. Begin spraying your rims. While spraying you want to keep the spray can about 12-16 inches away from the rim as stated on the back label of the can. You want to put an even coat of Plasti-Dip on the rims. The spray goes on quite watery so make sure you don't over spray and do fairly light coats. Also at times it goes on like crap but after it dries it looks fine.

6. Wait at least 30-40 minutes between coats (sometimes that may not be enough - make sure the rims do not look watery). You are going to need at least three coats. Two coats is not enough to cover your rims properly at times. Each coat on all rims will typically use up one can.

7. After your done all three coats give the rims at least 3-4 hours to dry up prior to putting it back on the car. (I put it on after 4 hours and went for a drive and it was fine).

8. Put the rims back on and enjoy! (I did this with my girlfriend's RSX recently this week. Pictures below).

Should probably avoid getting this stuff on the surface where the wheel contacts the hub/rotor as well as the seats for the lug nuts.

great topic, this will definitley save me money instead of powder coating.

i just checked home depots website and it sells for 6$ per 11oz. can 4 cans =24$
compared to 55$ per rim powder coating 4 rims=220$.. savings=196$ that i can spend on more mods and LEDs Posted Image

Wow, this is great. :)

I was planning to do this with my rims and had already picked up the plasti-dip as well from Home Hardware. :D (Isn't it ridiculous how much we're paying for the stuff vs. the U.S.?)

Thanks for the write up! This will be useful when I have the chance to get around to completing the project.

I was thinking of picking up some large cement blocks ($3 per block) at Lowe's and standing the car on those while I worked on all four of the rims at once (and painting the calipers). What do you guys think? Is it a bad idea?

I've never heard of plasti-dip causing any damage to paint. If you experiment with the stuff you'll realize it has the texture of a balloon and peels incredibly easy. I'd get a second opinion before you try it, but I don't see a reason why you couldn't experiment. :P

Yeah the price difference is stupid. Wouldn't recommend the blocks like other members here.

I would message Plasti-Dip themselves about that but if you Youtube this stuff, you can see some people do it to their bumpers, etc.

I don't really see why not but again don't take my word for it. Contact plasti-dip themselves if you'd like.

You can power wash it up to a certain extent. You can't be a dumbass about it and spray with 1,700 PSI as vipfreak has "kindly" pointed out
