Oh ok. Well... I don't do high rpms regularly, only when getting on the freeway if that.

Because with the oil vapor gunk in your engine, manifold, etc. - your car won't feel as "peppy" as it was when you bought it off the dealership. Carbon deposits aka normal wear and tear, gunky and grimey intake manifold and intake valves all lead to the consumer to spend more money and buy a new or used car.
Forgot to add, that part of the process that makes your Matrix an ULEV (ultra low emission vehicle) is that the oil vapor is sent back to the engine thereby reducing emissions - the trade off is altered/diminished performance as the gunk gradual builds up.
So in short - greed.
Keep the engine clean inside and out, and your car will thank you for it.

Well, I attempted rocker guard in my cargo area, and sadly it has failed to hold up to even the lightest abuse. It has started flaking and chipping. Not too sure I'd be willing to go the vinyl route... but I need to find something else that will work. Plasti-dip isn't a half bad idea, if it weren't for the ridiculous Canadian price.

Thanks for the suggestion. It's surprising how much the two cans of rocker guard I used noticeably helped with acoustic treatment (besides the cleaner look). Worth the $20 experiment, even if I know there are other products better suited for the application.
