Hey,

I have toyota Matrix XR 2005m 1.8L Automatic and He eats too much gass I think. I need 14-15L/100km in city, and 10-11L/100km out of city.

Matrix owners, tell me your opinions about this. Is it normal ?

I'm wondering to go to Toyota center to check it. Maybe there is some technical faults..

I'm curious how much eats other Matrix...

If my math is correct, that is approximately 20 city/27 hwy. A stock 1.8L should not be getting 27 mpg hwy unless your doing 80 with the A/C on. I would try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to reset the ECU along with some basic tune-up procedures: MAF, throttle body, PCV valve, IAC valve cleaning (all in the "How to" section. take a look at the air filter, and replace if necessary. ensure correct tire pressure.

If there is no CEL, I wouldn't worry about any "technical issues" as you mentioned. it sounds more like lack of maintenance. did you just buy it, or have you had it for a while. how many miles are on it? what kind of maintenance has been performed on it?

I had a 2003 Xr with an auto tranny got 22mpg in mixed driving...if I drive conservatively I could get 24. Only on LONG drives (hundreds of miles) using the cruise control would I get in the 30s (once 40s). The mpg remained completely consistent for the 5 years I had it.

Are you sure you guys are driving a Toyota Matrix??
....cuz I'm pretty sure if you are getting only 20-25 mpg, then you either slamming the accelerator 24/7 OR you got a V8 swap (which is practically impossible) lol.
But yea I think you should reset your ecu, or get it tuned, clean your air sensors, maybe get some stp fuel injector cleaner, and try putting 91 octane for a week or two. While doing this just log your results and see if it made any improvements, which it should.

keep a steady pedal....

my wife gets worse gas mileage in her yaris than i do, and i race my car

its all because she cant keep the pedal steady and she drives way too fast on the highway

forget this mpg nonsense - how many km's or miles do you get on a tank? i hate mpg numbers i dont care to do the math

I blame driving style for your bad mileage.
I have the 4WD trim that is the heaviest of all the other models and I've averaged 30mpg (mixed driving) ever since I changed the way I drove.
If we're looking for total mileage per tank, I get around 550-650km before the light hits.

Not much highway driving does hurt, but keep it under 3000 RPM and it helps a lot.

hahahaha keep it under 3000rpm. hahahahahaha

I don't think my car comes in under 3000rpm. Ever. Seriously. I think it idles at like 5k.

(I'm kidding, but ... only mostly.)

I would get 23 with short trips. Now I average about 26-27 with a 20 mile one way to work with 50/50 highway. I run 80 (at 3.5k) and 65 on the back roads. I try to keep the rpms around 2.5k in lower speed zones. I don't care too much about the mpg. I try to ride the bike which gets 53 mpg and is much more fun!

i just got 475km for 45 liters it used to be under 380km & it ate 40 to 45 liters so im getting there, for me i use shell 91 ( i look for shell gas stations that has the 91 as a separate hose, keeps things more pure) + the heavy 17's

basically 10km- 1 liter for me so far

I live in Lithuania (europe) and I use 95 gas. not 91. and I can drive about 100km with 10L in the highway. for city, I need 14-15L for 100km. I think It's preety fuking much for car with 1.8L engine. I allways drive below 3000 RMP. I just save my car and I'm not eagle in the roads. All filters are in good condition. the only way is to check car in Toyota center I think. Maybe they can tell me why my matrix eats so much gas.

Agreed that driving style is part of it. I drive with a lead foot and double tap the accelerator to downshift for more power wheen needed. Another part of the problem is the auto tranny. It HAS to be above 3000rpm to be going proper freeway speeds in So-Cal...otherwise you'll get a lot of road ragers hugging your tail.

I dunno though, I still think that they WAY overstated the mpg before the EPA changed its rules and testing methods. I've done most of those maintainence things, but like I said, this has been my MPG from the start...so that shouldn't have been a problem to begin with.

i think the rule around here is 10L per 100kms - the car can do better but regular driving should get you that

if you're getting less - you're driving like an idiot or the neighbours are syphoning your gas

I do not know what your problem is, my first idea would be driving style or where you drive. I have gotten an average of 32.1 mpg over the 63 thousand miles I have on my trix. when I try for great MPG's I can get 38-40. but that is with the rpms never going over 2800 and driving like a hypermiler.
