> How To Replace Wheel Hub Bolt For Rear Drum Brake Type
Posted by former_kanata_matrix - 04-22-09 11:23 - 18 comments
Alright after Costco strip one of my stud (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) yesterday when they install the new tires. I bought a new bolt from dealer $5.99 and with some good info from fellow MO's and 20 mins of my time during lunch hour lol.

Tools need:
Jack/jack stand/wheel choke
New bolt (duh)
An old lug nut that fit the bolt
Hammer
Torque wrench (set at 76 ft-lb)
WD-40

Optional stuffs:
Brake Cleaner (since I open the drum might as well clean it up)

Tools:
(IMG:http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/baovn/pic001.jpg)

Remove the bolts first then jack up the car. Remove the tire then remove the drum - my drum come off easy since it's no rust (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
(IMG:http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/baovn/pic003.jpg)

Take a hammer and beat the old/tore/strip bolt out...quiet easy took me 2 shots. Comepare old vs new
(IMG:http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/baovn/pic004.jpg)

Picture of the bolt is out
(IMG:http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/baovn/pic005.jpg)

Slip the new bolt in from behind
(IMG:http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/baovn/pic006.jpg)

Take a old nut that fit the bolt and put it on
(IMG:http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/baovn/pic008.jpg)

Impact wrench (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) or normal wrench if you don't have power tool. Tight it until the rear head is flushed again the hub. Just look over the other bolt and compare.
(IMG:http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/baovn/pic009.jpg)

Put the drum back
(IMG:http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/baovn/pic011.jpg)

Install the tire and torque wrench to the proper 76 ft-lb
(IMG:http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/baovn/pic012.jpg)

Voila you are done. Won't take longer than 15 mins took me 20 mins included the photo shoot (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

> How To: Change The Front Transfer Case Oil
Posted by keithvibe - 04-20-09 15:11 - 5 comments
First jack the car up and support it using a good set of jack stands.
You will need to jack it up quite high in order to get under the car.
You will need a 24mm wrench.
You won't be able to get in the space with a socket.
(IMG:http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss116/Keithvibe/IMGP1768.jpg)
Here is a photo of the fill and drain plugs.
The upper is the fill and lower is the drain.
Again don't mix up the plugs. One has a magnet on it to catch metal pieces, that one is the drain plug
Here is a photo showing the two plugs
(IMG:http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss116/Keithvibe/IMGP1769.jpg)
Here is what it looks like when you take them out and let it start to drain.
(IMG:http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss116/Keithvibe/IMGP1771.jpg)
Photo of the two plugs.
(IMG:http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss116/Keithvibe/IMGP1774.jpg)
The one on the left is the drain plug as you can see by the magnet in the middle of the plug.
(IMG:http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss116/Keithvibe/IMGP1775.jpg)
Once it's done draining replace the lower drain plug.
It says to torque them to 37ftlbs but honestly I don't know how you would get a socket in there to do that with out dropping the exhaust.
I just guessed on it kinda like most do when they change the oil and put their oil plug back in.
Then get your favorite oil, the same oil can be used in both front transfer case and rear transfer case.
(IMG:http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss116/Keithvibe/IMGP1776.jpg)
You will need a pump to fill the case.
Just keep pumping till it comes out the top fill hole
(IMG:http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss116/Keithvibe/IMGP1777.jpg)
once it's coming out the top fill hole just put the filler plug back in and again it should be torqued to 37ftlbs but I just did it by feel.
Wipe up any over flow and put your tools away. Your done

> How To: Change Your Rear Differential Fluid
Posted by keithvibe - 04-19-09 15:30 - 6 comments
First jack up the rear of the car and support it on jack stands.
You will need a 10mm allen socket
(IMG:http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o186/keithdeanne/IMGP0782.jpg)
Remove the two plugs on the rear transfer case.
The upper is the fill and the lower is the drain.
You can see the fill plug in this photo
(IMG:http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o186/keithdeanne/IMGP0781.jpg)
Clean the fill plug, it has a magnet in the middle to catch the small metal pieces.
(IMG:http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o186/keithdeanne/IMGP0789.jpg)
Don't mix up the plugs
Once it's done draining replace the drain plug and torque to 36ftlbs.
Refill the case with your favorite fluid
(IMG:http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss116/Keithvibe/IMGP1776.jpg)
You will need a pump to get it up there.
Just keep pumping till the oil comes out the fill plug. Once it comes out the fill plug quickly replace the upper fill plug.
Torque it to 36ftlbs.
thats it, your done. Put your tools away and wash up.

> Group Buy! Kvrperformance Rotors!
Posted by dnm - 03-27-09 14:01 - 200 comments
I posted this in the group buy thread and sent the paypal payment, but it hasn't been approved yet, so I'm listing it here to get the ball rolling, then Eric can just move it there when he gets the chance.

So I spent a little while on the phone with Terry from KVR Performance and got some SWEET prices on rotors. We need 5 sets of 4 rotors to get the group buy price.

Here are the prices:

4 rotors, in any design you want. Options are:
  • J-Hook Slots
  • Standard Slots
  • Cross drilled
  • "Brembo" drilled
  • Plain

Prices are 4 for $400 CAD.

If you want them cadmium plated in:
  • silver
  • black
  • gold

Then the price for 4 rotors is $450.

That's almost half their normal price.

Plus taxes & shipping.

People in the GTA/Southern Ontario are welcome to get in on one big shipment to my place and I can bring them to downtown Toronto with me for work, or to the next west-end meet for pickup.

Also, if you're coming to HCMO, you're welcome to have them shipped to me and I can bring them to you at HCMO. I've bought things from plenty of people on MO, so I'm sure some people would be willing to vouch for me not going to rip you off. You also have the option of calling him up and paying him directly and having them shipped directly to you at your cost.

Americans would pay the same price in USD and there would be no fees when it gets to your door for brokerage or taxes or anything. If you get yours shipped to me, there will be GST & PST as he's here in Ontario.

Also, if you have a base or XR and only need two discs, he has to get back to me on a price for just 4, but he says it should be about $250-280 including the drilling/slotting & plating, but don't hold me to that until we get an update on it.

Even if the GB falls through, I'm going for it.

> Front Bumper/bodykit Diy Repair
Posted by Pump - 03-21-09 21:30 - 9 comments
This happened over the summer, I just haven't been on MO.com in a long time so I hadn't thought to post it up.

What basically happened was that I was driving on the highway in pretty dense and fast (~75mph) traffic, when I tried to switch lanes, and as I started to move over and was able to see beyond the car in front of me, I notice a big tire tread chilling in the middle of the two lanes and I was headed right for it. So, naturally, I swerved back into my lane, but still ended up clipping it with the front pass. side of the bumper. I knew someone was broken, so I exited the freeway. I stopped at a red light, pulled up the handbrake, got out, noticed my entire front bodykit/lip had been torn off the car and was hanging by one clip and my bumper was knocked out of place where it meets the fender. So I just reached down, finished tearing off the bodykit, threw it in the car, and drove home.

I was fortunate that the bodykit stayed partially attached to the car, but now I had to repair it, because I didn't want to go out and buy a new one and get it all prepped up knowing that these pieces take a constant beating anyway, especially on a lowered car. So I set out to repair it.

(IMG:http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/2825/diybumper01.jpg)

(IMG:http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/456/diybumper02.jpg)

(IMG:http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/7004/diybumper03.jpg)

(IMG:http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/5839/diybumper04.jpg)

As you can see, ever clipping point and mounting point was cracked or broken off.

I hit up Home Depot and bought some pieces of thin, bendable, metal that I believe is used on roofing shingles. I made some patterns using paper and cut them out of the metal using some metal sheers.

(IMG:http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/3210/diybumper05.jpg)

(IMG:http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/8538/diybumper09.jpg)

(IMG:http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/1859/diybumper10.jpg)

Then, after drilling some holes, I used some nuts and bolts I also picked up at Home Depot to attach the metal pieces to the broken plastic pieces, and rejoin the broken parts.

Why did a make another one you may ask? Because there is so much confusion and so many different ways of doing this that I had a hard time deciding which one to do!

At the end of the day I did this, took me 1 minute and YES IT WORKS!!! Please don’t trash this thread with other ways or what worked or didn’t work for you because I don’t care! Keep it nice and simple!

Pictures speak for itself!
Above the pedals you will find this box!

> Toyota In Talks For Japan Government Loan!
Posted by XR2003 - 03-3-09 01:20 - 3 comments
http://news.moneycentral.msn.com/ticker/ar...7&Symbol=TM

"TOKYO (AP) - Toyota's financing unit is in talks with a Japanese government-backed bank on possible lending, the automaker said Tuesday, underlining the serious woes facing the car industry amid plunging global sales.Toyota Motor Corp. said no details had been decided. Kyodo News and NHK TV reported earlier in the day, without identifying sources, that Toyota's auto loan unit, Toyota Financial Services, had asked for a 200 billion yen ($2 billion) government loan.

A spokesman for Toyota Financial Services said the talks with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation were among the various ways being studied to gain funding. The lender does 70 percent of its business in the U.S., where sales have been plunging and credit tightening.

The Japan Bank for International Cooperation, which started helping cash-strapped Japanese businesses last year as the global financial crisis unfolded, said it does not comment on individual company matters. Some companies have been struggling for cash ahead of the fiscal year end of March 31.

The Finance Ministry said Tuesday it will provide an additional $5 billion from its foreign reserves this month to the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, to make sure there is ample cash available for needy businesses. Tokyo has about $1 trillion in foreign reserves.

Finance Minister Kaoru Yosano also said the ministry stands ready to raise the money pool available for lending in yen from 800 billion yen now to 1.2 trillion yen to help companies ride out the deepening global slump.

Toyota, which makes the Camry sedan and the Prius hybrid, had been growing solidly before the U.S. financial crisis hit last year. But now it is expecting a 350 billion yen loss for the fiscal year through March, as plunging global demand and a strengthening yen batter earnings.

Toyota's projected red ink for the fiscal year through March would mark its first such annual net loss since 1950, and a sharp contrast from the record 1.72 trillion yen profit it racked up the previous year.

Toyota is still faring better than General Motors and Chrysler, which together have received $17.4 billion in emergency loans from the U.S. government, and asked for an additional $21.6 billion in aid last month.

Nissan Motor Co. has said that it is considering various types of government aid, but it declined to say Tuesday whether it was requesting for Japan Bank for International Cooperation loans. Nissan has forecast a 265 billion yen net loss for the fiscal year through March.

Toyota shares fell 0.3 percent to 3,010 yen. The news of the lending talks broke before trading ended in Tokyo."

> How To: Drain-and-fill With Filter/strainer Change
Posted by madbikes - 02-12-09 19:44 - 0 comments
I've just happen to change my overdue engine oil and the ATF is also due for a change too. Since I'm getting close to 110K miles, may as well change the ATF filter/strainer. I heard it's supposed to be changed, but there is not really a known interval. The whole process is not very hard. When you purchase it at dealerships, it's the best to have your VIN ready so the parts people can better locate the correct part/part#.

Parts needed:
-filter/strainer. When you get it, make sure there's a gasket
-new gasket for the transaxle oil pan
-4 to 5 quarts Type T-IV ATF.

Procedures:
-place vehicle on Jack stands or a lift if you can access one
-remove transaxle oil pan drain plug to drain as much ATF as possible
-remove transaxle oil pan slowly. Leave at least two bolts on the same side on until you're sure you can drop the pan open. Watch for the rest of ATF coming out from the pan. You can go ahead to clean the pan afterwards.
-there are 3 bolts that hold the filter/strainer into place. Remove the bolts and the filter/strainer will come out
-make sure you put some ATF around the gasket of the new filter/strainer. Install it and torque the bolts to the correct specs (7ft-lbf)
-remove the old transaxle pan gasket and put the new one on. Hand tight the bolts first and tighten them (48in-lbf). Best to go in cris-cross pattern.
-install transaxle oil pan drain plug (14ft-lbf)
-remove the ATF dip stick. Use a funnel to help you pour the ATF into the filler tube.

The spec says 3.2 quarts is for drain-and-fill, but I barely get to the 'low" mark after the whole 4-quart/one gallon bottle of ATF. I couldn't find specific procedure to fill the tranny. But we filled it with at least 3 quarts through the filler tube, let the car run for about couple minutes. Check ATF level, then add the rest.

To check ATF:
-run the car to operating temperature (you can go ahead and drive it around until operating temperature). Park on level ground.
-put the e-brake on and cycle through all gears (P to L)
-remove ATF dipstick and wipe it. Put it in and remove it. The top two notches are marked "hot". Add fluid if fluid level is below the 3 notch from the bottom of the dipstick.

> How To Install A Block Heater In A 2009 Matrix Xr
Posted by William - 02-12-09 10:03 - 0 comments
I recently purchased a 2009 Matrix XR which comes with the 2.4l 2AZ-FE engine. Although I wanted a block heater I felt that $210 for a dealer installed heater, as shown on the Toyota Canada website, was a bit pricey. So I bought the car without the heater. I called the parts department at Downtown Toyota in Toronto, where I purchased the car, and was told the heater cost was $85 with $100 installation by the dealer.
I checked with Canadian Tire and they had a Zerostart heater manufactured by Phillips and Temro that would fit for $45 (part no. 30-3278-0). I bought the Zerostart unit and installed it myself. It is a cartidge type heater which fits into a cavity at the rear of the block on the driver's side. It is a bit tricky to install. You have to remove the air cleaner and you don't have much room unless you remove the heater hoses. I was able to get my hand under the hoses without removing them but it was very tight. If you are not comfortable about doing this, you could have your local mechanic do it probably for a lot less than $100. In any case it works well and I'm quite happy to save a few bucks in the process.

> Round 2 Projector Group Buy
Posted by keithvibe - 02-7-09 16:57 - 47 comments
Here is your chance to get on board to get a set if you missed the first round.
At this time there isn't a closing date.

The kit includes everything you need,2 projectors, two bulbs, two wire harnesses, two ballasts, sealant.

The kit will have the slim ballasts.
The only thing that the kit doesn't have is a switch and length of wire so you can wire up the angel eyes independent.
You can still wire the halos directly to your parking lights, if you wish.

If you plan on buying two kits one for low beam. One for high beam, keep in mind it takes the HID bulb about 30seconds to get up to full brightness. That being said if you still want two kits, don't ask for a refund because it doesn't work the way you though it would.
I have confirmed it would work the way I though it would in this thread
http://matrixowners.com/?showtopic=80574

NOTE: You must open your head lamp to install this kit.

Warranty is 1 year. Any problems I will need to see photos, and possibly even have the item returned (this will be handled case by case)

Halo/angel eye colors options: white, yellow, red, green, blue
Bulb color temp colors that are available: 4300k, 6000k, 8000k, and 10000k these are d2s bulbs with amp connectors.

> How To: Projector Retrofit Matrix Headlights With Corolla Projectors
Posted by dasspr - 01-12-09 17:01 - 6 comments
Retrofitting headlights…

This is matrix specific but also works for the corolla or any other car with similar headlights!
Tool needed!
10mm socket
Screw drivers
Dremel with basic bits
Baking oven
And a set of retrofits!

1st you take of the headlights! In some pics you may notice that my front bumper is still on! That’s right, no need for extra work! Just take out enough screws so that it lets you push it out a bit, then take of the lights!

After the lights are off you should take off all rubber and metal components you can before baking!

I used this DIY for baking them apart
http://www.9thgencorolla.com/forum//showthread.php?t=28944

As soon of you know in my case! I salvaged these projectors from a pair of corolla headlights!

(IMG:http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k135/mxpr/CIMG4108.jpg)

(IMG:http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll318/dasspr1/CIMG4130.jpg)

It’s very easy to take them apart since they are screwed in! Not glued or part of the shroud

(IMG:http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k135/mxpr/CIMG4109.jpg)

(IMG:http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll318/dasspr1/CIMG4123.jpg)

After the lights are apart place the projector over the light case so you can have more or less an idea of how big you have to make the hole. Sharpies work like magic here!

(IMG:http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll318/dasspr1/CIMG4129.jpg)

Cut of this part of the casing

(IMG:http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll318/dasspr1/CIMG4131.jpg)

(IMG:http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll318/dasspr1/CIMG4132.jpg)

I used these 2 tools with the dremel

> Projector Group Buy
Posted by keithvibe - 11-27-08 02:45 - 289 comments
Attention!!!!!

The needed amount has been met. For those who still want to get a kit PM ME. I will no longer be taking orders for this Group Buy after Sunday 12:00PM EST December 14th 2008 - PAY by then or you are OUT of LUCK!

Here is the thread everyone has been waiting for.
Once 20 kits have been paid for I will place the order. This may change depending on feedback and intrest.

I will have one of the mods update the closing date so everyone knows how much time they have left. At this time there isn't a closing date.

The kit includes everything you need,2 projectors, two bulbs, two wire harnesses, two ballasts, sealant.

The kit will have the slim ballasts.
The only thing that the kit doesn't have is a switch and lenght of wire so you can wire up the angel eyes independent.
You can still wire the halos directly to your parking lights, if you wish.

If you plan on buying two kits one for lowbeam. One for highbeam, I recommend that you DON'T do this.
Reason being is it takes the HID bulb about 30seconds to get up to full brightness. Having one in the highbeam will not be ideal
That being said if you still want two kits, don't ask for a refund because it doesn't work the way you though it would.

NOTE: You must open your head lamp to install this kit.

Warranty is 1 year. Any problems I will need to see photos, and possibly even have the item returned (this will be handled case by case)

Halo/angel eye colors options: white, yellow, red, green, blue, purple
Bulb color temp colors that are available: 4300k, 6000k, 8000k, and 10000k these are d2s bulbs with amp connectors.
Car plug types: h4/9003, 9004/9007,h1,h7, 9005,9006
Payment: paypal *address removed. PM for info*
Kit price is $235, shipped. USD funds, Convert in paypal before paying
bulb price per set is: 28.00
Bulb colors are the same as stated above
Include in your paypal payment special notes area the halo color, plug type, and bulb temp and your SCREEN NAME. This will save me a lot of time searching or contacting you for further info.

> How To Fix Your Electric Window Motor
Posted by Fastrix - 10-21-08 17:33 - 6 comments

his is how to repair your window motor, my driver window needed it but it should be the same for all of them. The dealership wanted $305.00 for a new motor, turns out mine only needed the carbon brushes replaced cost----$5.00 and a little blood, sweat and swearing. Satisfaction that I kept my $300 out of the pockets of the evil Toyota Parts Department----Priceless. But I digress, back to the matter at hand

You'll need to remove the door panel, I didn't take pics of this but, simply remove the screw behind the little flap behind the inside door handle, and the one from the bottom of the door pull (little pocket like thing below the power window switches) and the cover over the tweeter up on the door if so equipped. Pull at the bottom of the door panel until it pops loose then pick it straight up out of the window opening. The wiring will still be attached to the window switches, the connector has a sliding locking part.
(IMG:http://members.cox.net/fastrix/Windowmotorrepair/DSC02750.JPG)
(IMG:http://members.cox.net/fastrix/Windowmotorrepair/DSC02751.JPG)
The release for the locking slide is on the bottom of the connector, press it in with any convenient screwdriver and slide the locking part out, then the connector will pull loose.
(IMG:http://members.cox.net/fastrix/Windowmotorrepair/DSC02748.JPG)
Peel back all this stuff, there is also a bracket for the door pull that needs to be removed, gold colored thing that looks like it's in the way held by 2 screws.
(IMG:http://members.cox.net/fastrix/Windowmotorrepair/DSC02752.JPG)
Remove the plug from the motor, green with 2 wires. At this point you should check that there is the correct voltage coming from the wires when you operate the window switch. It doesn't matter which way you insert the test leads for a meter or a test light, since the switch sends the opposite current for up and down. Make sure you have voltage in both positions. If the switch and wiring check out proceed with removing the motor. Mine fortunately got stuck down but I think you can get it out once all the bolts are removed regardless. There are 4 bolts that hold the motor end, no pic sorry, but they are all 10mm head bolts in the vicinity of the plug. Take these loose first and then remove the 2 bolts from the window track and slide the window away from you and rest it in the bottom of the door.
(IMG:http://members.cox.net/fastrix/Windowmotorrepair/DSC02765.JPG)
(IMG:http://members.cox.net/fastrix/Windowmotorrepair/DSC02754.JPG)
Remove these 2 screws last and slide the window regulator and motor assembly out of the big hole at the bottom of the door.
(IMG:http://members.cox.net/fastrix/Windowmotorrepair/DSC02757.JPG)
(IMG:http://members.cox.net/fastrix/Windowmotorrepair/DSC02758.JPG)
There are 3 Torx screws that hold the motor on to the window regulator, remove these and the motor will pop loose (again no pic but will be obvious once the whole thing is out.)
Remove the 3 small phillips head screws and the metal motor cover. Be careful the nuts for the screws are not attached and will escape at the first chance they get. The inside of the motor may come out with it but that's ok. You will see 2 little rectangular things with copper wire held in by springs, pop off the springs and slide out the brushes, careful not to lose the springs they have a tendency to wander off as well. This is a pic of the old brush, one that I've sanded down to fit and one that I started with.
(IMG:http://members.cox.net/fastrix/Windowmotorrepair/DSC02736.JPG)
I used this palm sander inverted in vise, but you can use a file to make them fit. Unfortunately I could only get much larger ones from the alternator shop that I use, but I bet some might be found at a power tool repair center that are closer in size. Regardless it's just carbon it's very easy to shape.
