So what is the best sounding muffler for the XR. Im looking for a low to stock sounding idle and a performance groul during acceleration. I will be taking my car to an exhaust shop and getting a 2.25" exhaust from the resonator back. Please let me know what you guys think. Im not looking for a great deal of power gain just better than stock. thanks once agian to all that reply

Borla canister is only 14in
Magnaflow is 18in

will the length make a change anything?

I have a 05 matrix XR AWD
K&N pannel filter and soon to have an exhaust

The shorter the muffler, the louder it will be. Which muffer from Borla are you looking at? Canister-type muffler may not be for you if noise level is a concern.

thanks to all, the best choice is a magnaflow XL center/offset muffler(18in) resonator back at 2.25" piping. This will give me the best of both worlds. a noticable differance over stock gain in power with minimal torque loss. The magnaflow has very low in cabin droning were as the borla seems to drone then rasp.

Exhaust,CAI, Denso Iridium plugs, synthetic oil change are basically all I will be doing to my car. Thanks agian to all that helped me with my questions

Well, maybe only 1 in 5 falls apart in california.

But they don't survive well in places with different seasons.

LOL i thought it was just the 1st gen Magnaflow exhausts that had the resonator rattle. I think they've fixed the issue since then. @ least that's what i remember hearing.

that could be true. We get rain but never snows were I live. No salt on roads...etc. I believe what your saying about corrosion and rust, I used to live in Chicago.

I have the Borla and I don't find it drones much at all mind you I have the undercoating which may cut the noise down.

Good Luck with your upgrades.

I thought the magnaflow had just the resognator that the baffling broke in? Not the muffler itself....but I could be wrong. I plan on getting a magnaflow cat back, heard good things.

seriously man stop spreading your bs

you bought just the resonator a cheap one at that and it fell apart.

i have had my magnaflow cat back on my car for 3 years now including winters and have had no problems at all.

and the rattling issue has been fixed. It was only on the first gen ones.

pmag maybe you should tell people the whole story next time instead of your bit answers.

I have the same exact resonator as the one in the catback system.

I guess the whole cat back system is 'a cheap one at that'.

A company producing a complete bolt up aftermarket exhaust system should have no issues. Period. Especially welds.

And I drove around for almost a year with a cel caused by a quality magnaflow cat, but I didn't get into that discussion here.

The Original poster here didn't ask about a magnaflow cat back, he asked about Borla XS vs Magnaflow XL.

I gave him my 2cents about my experience with my quality magnaflow parts, in general.

You have a problem with that, take it to pm.

You have a problem with me about the way I post? Thats rich coming from you.

I'm not looking to get dragged into one of your Lime vs. Anybody Else online battles, because I find them boring and childish.

I'm done in this thread.

Magnaflow = poop, click for my thread

*edited to add my thread about my experience with my quality magnaflow resonator, still rattling to this day.. lifetime warranty my huh?

I'll back PMAG on this one. I'm not really saying they are junk. But I've seen a couple of local ones that rusted pretty heavily after a couple of winters....which winters here are fairly mild. Of course they both had the rattling resonators as well. I do think they sound good though.
