I installed a switch today to control the DRL's completely. You can turn them on and off while you're driving or any other time. I installed a switch on the red w/ white stripe wire at pin #12 on the DRL module. Unlike the yellow wire mod, this mod doesn't require you to ground the wire, you just clip the wire and install a switch. Or if you just wanted to disable them, you would clip the wire and be done with it. This is the way Toyota has told their dealers to do it, and with the help of champcaracing, I did it today. (Thanks Neal!) I'll take some pictures tomorrow and edit this post with them. Its a very simple mod, but its somewhat of a pain in the a** working under the steering wheel.
How To: Slide the DRL module to the left and off the mounting bracket (you may have to wiggle it a bit back and forth). (IMG:http://www.pbase.com/image/21136752.jpg) Push it up to the left so you're looking at the harness from the top with the 2 big wires on the left hand side. (IMG:http://www.pbase.com/image/21136754.jpg) The wire you need to cut is the red/white wire at pin 12, the top left wire just to the right of those 2 big wires. (IMG:http://www.pbase.com/image/21136759.jpg) I just ran some lamp cord from an empy slot next to the coin holder below the mirror controls to this area, and connected it to the two ends of the clipped red/white wire. I taped the wire to the existing wires for a nice fit. (be careful, there is some tubing near the area that gets HOT, not sure what it is, but stay away from it.) It takes some time and patience working under there, but it is relatively simple. Good luck! (IMG:http://matrixowners.com/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Here's the pdf files from Toyota... Doing it this way...do your automatic headlights still work? I know cutting the yellow wire and grounding it stops this feature.

Yes, if the switch is turned on. Maybe I should explain it better...the switch bypasses the DRL's and the auto on feature, if the switch is on, the DRL's and the auto lights feature are turned on as well. If the switch is off, the DRL's and auto-on feature are off. Its not setup so you can turn off the DRL's, and leave the auto-on feature working. That would be something, though. This has probably been covered somewhere else....
I like the idea of being able to turn the DRL's on and off, but is there a way you can have that and totaly disable the AutoSense feature. My last car had the auto sense, but it wasn't nearly as sensitive as the Trix, so it wasn't nearly as annoying. It can be bright sunshine and if I drive in the shade too long....."flip" over to headlights. Arghh, especially when wearing polarized sunglasses. Also, what kind of switch did you use. I think you can get a switch from Toyota that fits perfectly in the unused slot you are talking about. |

dcjamies, I don't know how to do that, perhaps someone will figure it out eventually.
I just used a switch I had laying around from an old electronics project. Its only temporary, I just have the wire and switch sticking out of that hole now. I'm gonna shop around tomorrow and find a cool one for the spot, I'd like to find one with a hinged cover, similar to an eject button or something! (IMG:http://matrixowners.com/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) I'll post pictures when I get it finished. |

try removing the instrument cluster bezel, then the cluster, the relay box should be on your right side, hanging from the dash support bar.

ok so it's one wire and it's the red/white wire? then cut it or splice it? if cut what side of the box? the wire coming out of the box or the other side?
it looks like you have 2 wires going in there? the 2 yellow lines. so if it is 1 wire going to the switch, did you ground the switch also? sorry for the questions, just want to make sure |

no need to ground the red/white wire, just make sure you snip the right one (pin 12). Thats why this mod is so easy, all you have to do is clip the wire and forget about it, the DRL is disabled. You can add a switch like I did, thats where the yellow lines go...
cut the wire coming out of the DRL module, its pretty well explained in the pic I think. It was a b**** working under there, thats why my electrical tape job is a little sloppy. I suggest using a set of automatic wire strippers, its a snap stripping wire with one hand with those babies. |

There are couple thing that control the headlight after scanning thru the wiring diagram.
- The HL relay is control by 3 different circuits joining together (DLR, SW, and Light Sensor. - DRL is control by Ignition (Key ON) and brake SW. - If the switch is on, DRL circuit and LS is disconnect. - If the LS is on, DRL is disconnect. If we can trace and issolate the DRL circuit coming from and out to Pin 12, we can put a switch between to have manual control of the DRL and leave the other untouch. Time to hack the DRL module. |

I want to know is, if I disable the DRL, will the auto light disabe as well. I don't really like the DRL and the auto light on an off all the time. I want to control the light myself. I don't really care about a switch to turn on and off, I just want to turn the stupid DRL and auto light off permanently. I was thinking to add the HID system to regret off the DRL and auto light. Now, I might consider doing it myself to turn the DRL off. Thank you very much for the information.

Hey johnald, I want to disable my DRL but I have a couple question see if you can help me out. First question is the pin number you stated is number 12. When I went under th steering wheel I can not see exactly pin number 12, only what you stated as red and white wire. If this is the wire you talking about.
Another question is if I don't want to add a switch with it. Can I just use tape to wrap around the two end of the wire. And if the future if I decided to turn the DRL back on, can I reconnect the two end together. Please reply ASAP because I will try to do this mod this weekend (Sunday). Thank you very much. I'm not very good in electric if you know what I mean. (IMG:http://matrixowners.com/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Thank you very much. Yes, this mod disables both the DRL and auto-lights feature. |
